Dambulla golden temple is a World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka, locatied in the central province of the country.
Golden cave temple is the biggest cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. There are more than 80 familiar caves in this area. There are five caves, which contain statues and arts. These are related to Buddha and his life. The paintings cover an area of 23000 sq ft. The early Sri Lankans would have lived in these cave complexes. there were burial places with human skeletons about 2700 years old found near the cave.
The rock cave temple Dambulla cave is a monastery and it’s the best-preserved ancient site in Sri Lanka. The King Valagamba have been converted the caves into a temple in the first century BC. Evacuated from Anuradhapura, he required protection here from South Indian usurpers for 15 years. The caves had become a main religious center. Nissanka Malla, King of Polonnaruwa cover the cave with Gold Plated and added 70 Buddha statues in 1190. During the Last kingdom, Kandy in 18th century, the caves were restored and painted.
There are five caves of varying size and magnificence. The rock caves built during the 1st century BC to 1250 AD, and so far the most significance cave temple found in Sri Lanka. It has the statues of Lord Buddha, Hindu Gods, King Valagamba & Nissankamalla and Monk Ananda.
